About the condition
What morton’s neuroma is
Symptoms
Common symptoms
- Burning pain in the ball of the foot, often spreading into the toes
- Tingling or numbness between two toes
- A feeling of standing on a pebble or a fold in your sock
- Pain that is worse in tight shoes and better barefoot
Causes and usual care
Pressure and irritation of the nerve are the usual triggers — narrow or high-heeled shoes, high-impact activity, and foot shapes such as bunions, hammertoes, flat feet or a high arch. Other problems cause similar pain in the ball of the foot, including metatarsalgia and a stress fracture.
Most people start with wider, lower-heeled shoes, a metatarsal pad and orthotics, and avoiding the activities that set it off. Injections are sometimes used. When pain persists, surgery to release or remove the affected nerve is an option.
Regenerative care
Where regenerative care may fit
- Burning, tingling or numbness between the toes that has not settled with footwear and pads
- People who want their nerve pain evaluated by nerve specialists before deciding on surgery
- Patients who want to understand non-surgical options first
Not everyone is a candidate. Our physicians evaluate your condition and imaging before recommending any treatment.
When it is not the right answer
Some neuromas do not settle without surgery. Our physicians include specialists in lower-extremity nerve surgery, so they can tell you honestly whether a non-surgical approach is worth trying for your case.

Morton’s Neuroma — common questions
Is Morton’s neuroma a tumour?
No. Despite the name, it is not a tumour or a cancer. It is a thickening of the tissue around a nerve between the toes.
Who treats Morton’s neuroma at the Institute?
Nerve pain in the lower extremity is evaluated by our physicians, including specialists in lower-extremity nerve care. Our Chicago practice specializes in lower-extremity nerve surgery.
Do I need surgery?
Not necessarily. Many people improve with footwear changes, pads and orthotics. Our physicians specialize in non-surgical options and will only recommend surgery when it is truly the right answer.
Is the consultation free?
Yes. Your consultation is free, and you will get specific numbers for your own plan before you commit to anything. Most consultations begin as a telehealth call.
Does insurance cover regenerative treatment?
Regenerative treatments — stem cell therapy, exosome therapy, PRP, peptide therapy and BMAC — are not covered by insurance, and we do not bill insurance for them. Many patients use HSA or FSA funds where their plan allows it, and CareCredit and Affirm Pay-in-4 are available at checkout. See financing and our published prices.
