The autologous chondrocyte implant is a process where cartilage cells from the patient are taken, cultured and implanted. This promotes cartilage regeneration. These surgical procedures are effective but have some limitations. Microfracture can result in the formation of fibrocartilage, which is less durable than cartilage. Graft procedures are associated with risks, such as donor-site morbidity, failure of the graft, and immune reactions. Multiple surgeries are required for autologous chondrocyte implantation with a long rehabilitation period. Not all surgical procedures are without risk, such as infection, blood clots and anesthesia-related complications.
